Raynaud’s disease is a
disorder of the small blood vessels of the extremities. When the extremities are
exposed to the cold, or other triggers, the blood vessels can spasm, which can
result in pain, tingling and numbness. This usually happens to the fingers or
toes, but can also include the nose, ears and other parts of the body. Fingers
or other affected areas can even turn a white or blue color when exposed to
cold.
This is a fairly common
disorder, with up to 5-10% of the population suffering some level of Raynaud’s
disease. Treatments for Raynaud’s include avoidance of cold or other triggers.
There are some oral medications, such as calcium channel blockers, that help
expand blood vessels, but these medications can cause some side effects.
